Indiana Pacers fans might get tired of seeing Paul George featured as my player battle, but he’s the new superstar of the team, so he’s going to end up here alot. On the Cleveland Cavaliers side, was there any doubt it would be Kyrie Irving? A guy that I had to take away my Duke bias, and really give the look over. I saw him playing the Pacers in person, and realized just how good he’s going to be. He’s a guy that makes everyone around him that much better. He’s going to be a top point guard soon enough if not right there already. So you have two guys really stepping into that role of leader for their respective teams.
The Indiana Pacers will have to be on their toes defensively guarding Mr. Irving. He’s a guy that can get into the lane and feed the ball to open guys. He can create his own shot as well. He’s got all those special tools that make a point guard rise above everyone else. Paul George to me would get that call defensively at times to slow down Irving. There’s not a lot of talent around Irving, but I still feel like he’ll make those guys that much better if they’re able to hit some shots.
On the Cavs side, they’ll have to figure out how to game plan for Paul George, who I believe is going to be that much better this coming season. I don’t think there’s a guy that can defend George from the Cavs. It will take some double teams and different defensive looks to slow him down. George is a guy that I can see really looking for his teammates this coming season as that’s one aspect I want to see where he can improve. We all know George can shot and finish at the rim. Those areas are probably where he’ll want to take advantage the most against this Cavs team.
Both guys are just ready to make that leap into superstar level. Both guys are ready to make multiple All Star bids. Both guys are now that face of a franchise. That’s why this is a battle that’s very important to watch. Two guys who want to lead their team to a victory.
