It looks like the Indiana Pacers have filled out their coaching staff, and I imagine one of their last moves of this busy off season. Full of coaching changes, player personnel changes, and air of optimism, the Pacers have added former player Popeye Jones to the coaching staff. He’s one of those names that I didn’t think about when it came to coaching, but from researching him, he’s actually be on some staffs for the past few years. He’s a guy that played a solid basketball career, and then joined the staff of the Brooklyn Nets when Avery Johnson got the job there. Then he stuck around when P.J. Carleismo when he got the interim tag after Johnson got the boot. So a bit of experience in the coaching ranks for Mr. Jones, but I don’t think he’s a name that is too known as a big time hire.
Then again, the Pacers are in that place, where a big time hire wasn’t needed. They already added Nate McMillian, who is a former coach and player, so I think Jones is a great guy to just add for that former player ability. He’s a guy that can work a bit with the players now, and make them better. I think the Pacers are smart to add former players to assist with Coach Frank Vogel, who doesn’t have any NBA playing experience to speak of. It’s probably surprising that guys really take him to heart because of that. But I believe with Vogel’s bright attitude and words of encouragement, he was that perfect fit for this team when he got the interim call.
Now, the Pacers have all their ducks in the row for the season. Time to start the workouts for players. Get their bodies in shape for what should be a lengthy season. This upcoming season will have some high expectations as it should based upon how the Pacers finished last season. One game short of the NBA Finals, and they already feel like they could be a better team this season. This coaching staff will have to work hard to make sure all the players play up to their own expectations, and we’ll be talking about what a great season this team will have.
