NBA Off Season: Indiana Pacers Summer League Expectations

I don’t have many expectations for what this summer league will mean. It could be a guy gets bumped up to the roster, but there’s only one roster spot left for the Pacers, therefore the odds are slim. But I would like to see what a few of the guys who will be on the roster can do.  First, starting with Miles Plumlee, who I have been very vocal about his playing ability.  I will be changing my tune if he can show up and do something this summer to prove his worth for the team. I still don’t think he gets much playing time during the regular season, but with a good showing, he could at least get a chance to play some more and get that experience, like Orlando Johnson did last year.

Johnson is another guy to watch for.  Now he’s a guy that I do believe in, and hope that he can become a productive bench player.  But he’s got to get ready to go now, and come out shooting the ball.  He looked a bit confident at times last season, when he get those chances.  I think he’ll get an even bigger chance to play, and he has to take advantage of that.

Johnny Flynn is one of those names that I was surprised to see pop up on the Pacers summer roster.  But he’s a former high draft pick, and could end up on the Pacers official roster with some good play.  The Pacers could use that type of guard that Flynn plays at, and he did show that he was up for productivity early in his career. Maybe he just needs that right team to get back to where he was.  The Pacers might have to take an extra look at this guy, and see if he’s right for them.

Finally, you look at Ben Hansbrough, who did get a bit more playing time last season, and could end up back with the Pacers this season. I don’t know if the chances are that great, especially with the signing of C.J. Watson, but you still need that third point guard around in case of injury.  Hansbrough could be that guy to come in short stretches, and give Hill/Watson some rest during the season.  He’ll have to work hard during these summer games to make sure he’s ready for that opportunity.

This is a good time for other guys to showcase their talents, and earn that final roster spot.
