HoopsHype has put together their own mock draft, and the Indiana Pacers at 23 have selected Rudy Gobert. Now reading through the scouting report, this guy does have that length that the Indiana Pacers would love to have. You bring in Rudy Gobert as another option at center, and hope that he can produce. But that’s also the downfall, consistently. If I’m drafting for the Pacers, I want something more consistent.
The Pacers already took a chance on a big man last year in Miles Plumlee, so I don’t know if I would bring in yet another big man. I know the idea of having plenty of bodies is key, but this guy doesn’t scream first round draft pick to me. I don’t imagine he would get much if any playing time, especially if you want to get Plumlee and even Jeff Pendergraph more time. This guy looks like someone who has to develop over time, and do the Pacers want to invest in that right now?
Personally, the team is right there knocking on the door step of contending for a title. I would look for that consistent scoring threat off the bench if you can’t find that through free agency. But bring in a rookie, who can give you 10-15 minutes each night and provide that scoring spark would be the way to go. Rudy Gobert sounds like a great guy with some big potential, but for me, I wouldn’t go about drafting him for the Indiana Pacers. Maybe if it was a few years down the road, this guy would be a good fit. But right now, the Pacers have other needs to fill, which is what this draft should be used for.
