Post Game Grades: Roy Hibbert and the Indiana Pacers Take Game One from the Knicks

Today’s game should teach observers two things.

First is that the Pacers are extremely difficult to beat, when they do Pacer things. It wasn’t a dominating defensive performance, but it was still good. And Roy Hibbert was as dominant at the rim as you could ever hope to see.

At the offensive end, they moved the ball side-to-side, worked inside, and played with patience. Indy committed 16 turnovers – which is too many – but gave up only 13 points off turnovers. This is a huge difference, considering the Pacers were outscored 33-2 in points off turnovers in their last loss in the Garden.

Second is the fleeting nature of success.

The New York Knicks spent five months and 82 games earning the #2 seed. It took them 48 minutes to lose its benefit.

This was a very big win for the Indiana Pacers, but it was only one. It takes four to move on. The Knicks can – and will – play better. Coach Frank Vogel and his charges would be well served to remember that the job isn’t anywhere near complete.
IndNyk game 1

Here is how each guy played individually tonight. Agree? Disagree? Express your thoughts below in the comments or yell at me (@8pts9secs) or Tim (@TimDonahue8p9s) on Twitter.

David West, PF 37 MIN | 8-15 FG | 4-5 FT | 4 REB | 2 AST | 0 STL | 2 BLK | 3 TO | 20 PTS | +14

Physical. Efficient. Everything the Pacers needed from their leader.

Paul George, SF 43 MIN | 5-14 FG | 7-8 FT | 5 REB | 4 AST | 0 STL | 0 BLK | 4 TO | 19 PTS | +3

Not an efficient day, but still 19 points and his typical good defense. If this is is the “bad road” Paul George, the Pacers will be fine.

Roy Hibbert, C 39 MIN | 6-9 FG | 2-2 FT | 8 REB | 4 AST | 0 STL | 5 BLK | 2 TO | 14 PTS | -1

The difference. Absolutely dominant at the rim today. He went straight up, and didn’t foul…but that’s always a judgment call. The series may hinge on that judgment.

George Hill, PG 43 MIN | 5-17 FG | 2-2 FT | 7 REB | 6 AST | 0 STL | 0 BLK | 1 TO | 14 PTS | +11

Struggled with his shot, but was still a solid presence in Indy’s win.

Lance Stephenson, SG 39 MIN | 5-9 FG | 1-3 FT | 13 REB | 3 AST | 3 STL | 0 BLK | 1 TO | 11 PTS | +17

Stop and think a minute about how valuable Lance Stephenson’s growth has been to the Pacers this season. One of the team’s most solid performers in the playoffs.

Tyler Hansbrough, PF 11 MIN | 3-6 FG | 2-2 FT | 4 REB | 1 AST | 0 STL | 0 BLK | 1 TO | 8 PTS | -7

Stole some rest for West and fouls for PG with his 4th quarter stint guarding Melo. Got beat, but not badly.

Sam Young, SF 6 MIN | 0-0 FG | 0-0 FT | 2 REB | 0 AST | 0 STL | 0 BLK | 3 TO | 0 PTS | -5

Moving on…

Ian Mahinmi, C 9 MIN | 0-0 FG | 0-0 FT | 1 REB | 0 AST | 0 STL | 1 BLK | 1 TO | 0 PTS | +8

I see you, there, Ian…hiding behind Sam.

D.J. Augustin, PG 13 MIN | 5-6 FG | 2-4 FT | 0 REB | 1 AST | 0 STL | 0 BLK | 0 TO | 16 PTS | -5

So, helping the Pacers win one game a series makes up for a whole lotta sins.

Frank Vogel

His team “stuck to who they are.” He needs to keep them there.

man that was a sweet game to watch…and how silent the Knicks fans were…till they regained their composure and started booing.
1 win a series doesn’t make but that was a good start! Go Pacers!!!!!!!!

    • Derek U

It’s a great way to kill home court advantage from the get-go. Pacers just need to play solid this next game, then bring home Saturday for games 3 and 4.
and you mean until they regained their composure, and went him mid 4th quarter.

  • joseph davey

Great game. Please do not allow Sam young to play another minute, he is probably the worst player in the nba. Hibbert played like defensive player of the year.

    • Realist

“I can’t believe we gave Roy Hibbert $x million.”

      - no one, for a while

Also, Lance with another sick line. Quietly dominating, again.

Max deal was a necessary evil for hibb. It would have been nice to get him for cheaper, but his defense has always been such that he’s valuable out there on the court even when his shot isn’t falling (aka, the entire first half plus of the season).

        • lil-bang

Bet the Knicks wish they could say the same thing for Melo and JR, but oh that’s right all they are good for is shooting and when they can’t shoot, they are screwed.

          • Philip Tarrant

And yet Melo got a 1st place vote for MVP… funny ole world.

    • Philip Tarrant

Dude went through a horrible stretch. Turnover, and1 foul, turnover. All in like a minute of play.

    • Adam Stout

I’m pretty sure “Solo” Jones is worse.

      Just sayin’.

I believe that was with Sam Young was saying with his 6 minutes out on the court.

    • Joe Betz

Yeah, Johnson needs to get a run at Melo with the second unit. Green is so erratic on defense that it would be a nightmare unless Vogel was rolling the offensive dice, but Johnson’s work ethic and outside shot should get him in the game tonight…I hope…jesus, Sam Young made me cringe in a way I have not cringed in awhile…

DJ thankfully had everything working today, so much so that even the offical scorer gave him an assist rather than a miss on his missed Layup off the bottom of the rim early in the second that Tyler put back up and in. Ian should have been given a higher grade since D- is way too close to Sam and nobody should be in that neighborhood and he did fill in for a +8 even if his stat sheet was light.

    • Derek U

Yeah, I saw the +8 and figured his play wasn’t that bad, nothing bad (not 3 TO’s in 6 minutes), but nothing good either except a couple altered shots at the rim.

    • lil-bang

The Pacers point guard position is the major contributor(I believe) to how far the Pacers make it in the playoffs. The East is weak on point guards, so George Hill and DJ must play better than their counterpart almost every game to even out the other matchups. I don’t think the Knicks will be dumb enough to leave DJ open for 6 3′s again…I would have given DJ an A, just for shooting that last 3. I thought he just opened the door to Knicks stealing that game when he missed that 3. Otherwise huge game from DJ. He picked up Hill’s off night.

  • Jack Wright

Lol when will Vogel learn….. don’t play Sam Young!! and don’t give me this bull that he’s in for his defense. Get that guy off the floor. Good win, though.

  • Taposh ‘Tap’ Rudra

“I see you there Ian.. hiding behind Sam”. Nice :D

  • Ian

I assume Vogel thought Sam Young was a better option that Pendergraph, Green and OJ because of matchup issues?
But I’m not sure what matchup he was going for. Pendergraph seems active enough and enough of a banger to body up on Carmelo, neither player is going to be really effective so why not play someone who brings something else to the table? Or if we need to matchup small why not OJ? Is his defense THAT bad?

    • Derek U

Part of me wonders how much of JOB still boils inside of Vogel. He’s been relunctant to give Juice any minutes outside of garbage time; is this like you said, his typical lack of defense? or is it because he has that hate for rookies as well?

  • lil-bang

Not sure if I would give Vogel an A+. Seems like his grade is just based on win/loss compared to his actual “performance”. But I’m glad we keep the grade on here. He continues to play Sam Young, who has not shown us anything but how not to play basketball. OJ must have done something off court or in locker room that just doesn’t sit well with the team, there is no reason he hasn’t had any important playing time.
We will get to see Tuesday how well Vogel did at preparing his starters for 40 minutes a game…I am afraid the Pacers are going to be gassed out Tuesday (39 minutes from Roy Sunday), I would assume the Knicks are going to push the temp and burn them out. Maybe Vogel was just playing to get one on the road? Good strategy, just as long as the Pacers do their Part at home.
Oh Melo, please keep leaving DJ wide open for 3… “Bold move Cotton, let’s see if it works out for them”

Would someone please take Sam Young behind the shed and put him out of his misery?
