After watching D. J. Augustin put together the game he had yesterday, it is an intriguing thought. Yes I understand one game can’t speak for so much more. But you look at the way Augustin played, and there was some chatter about a move like this anyways, and who knows maybe the wheels are in motion. This would actually move George Hill to the shooting guard position, something he has stated he’s much more comfortable doing. In a way, he’s got so good at being that floor leader, I feel like it could work out for the best. You can have Augustin and Hill really run the offense together. Plus if you’re going to keep a starter out there, you can move Hill back to the point position with some of the bench guys.
Now what this move would also do is move Lance Stephenson out of the starting lineup. I feel like this could hurt him a bit because he’s looked so much more confident out there, and he’s playing with so much energy with those starters. Could he bring that same energy to the bench? I wouldn’t look at it as a demotion, but more moving the pieces around as long as Stephenson is that first guy off the bench. I know he’s not been so much of a producer with the stats at his position when you look at it, but the way he’s played says a lot. From two years ago, with no playing time, and now he’s starting says a lot about his improvement.
I have no clue if anything like this will happen, but I can see it becoming a possibility. Maybe Hill and Augustin could work together in practice and Coach Frank Vogel will see how it’s working. If anything, I hope Augustin can bring this effort he brought yesterday to the second unit. That bench can really use his point guard abilities, and I think he can understand what his role would be as part of that.
