USA starts the medal round against a scrappy Australian team that’s coming off three straight wins. The Americans are coming off a dominating performance that didn’t look that way in the first half. But they pulled their game together and put away Argentina, who they might see next round.
That’s the key for this game is that Team USA needs to turn it on from the beginning. I’ve said many times in previewing these Olympic games that USA can turn it on when they need to. But why can’t they just turn it on at the beginning, dominate these games, and move on to the next round?
The approach has to be that way. It’s win or get knocked out, so each game has a little bit of pressure on it. Not like this team has some pressure anyways after all the talk of this year’s team versus the original Dream Team. Have we beat that to death yet? If this year’s team fails, there’s no debate on who’s better. But if 2012 USA can put together some crushing wins, then the debate might rage on.
Today’s game marks the start of what should be a gold filled way for Team USA. Anything less would be a failure.
