USA Basketball 2012: Did TEAM USA run up the score?

Looking over the box score of yesterday’s TEAM USA win, in which records were destoryed, and Team Nigeria was destroyed by 83 points, I would have to say that USA didn’t run up the score, and there’s no harm in winning the way they did.

Isn’t this what Americans want to see this Team USA do?  Win by as much as possible and run to the gold.  There’s a lot of pressure on this year’s team to win the gold, and show the world that Americans are still dominate at basketball.  As the flow of international players has grown in the NBA, there’s still that feeling of how much basketball is an American sport.

With a guy like Lebron James on this team, how could you not want USA to win soundly?  To run away from opponents.  To remind people of the 1992 Dream Team, where they were winning by 40 and 50 points in the rounds leading up to the gold medal.  This year’s team wants to prove that they are in fact better than that team.  Whether they are better is a whole other story.  But I get the sense that this year’s team hates that talk about the 1992 team, and that’s fine.  Why not go out there and prove you are a better team by putting together DOMINATING performances?

No, no, no! They did not run up the score. It’s not the team in the lead’s job to slow down. It’s the trailing team’s job to stop them. PLAY BETTER DEFENSE!
