USA Basketball Team is Set

Well here we are just a couple of weeks away from the 2012 Olympics in London, England.  The USA Men’s Basketball team finalized their roster, which looks like this:

Kobe Bryant, Lakers
James Harden, Thunder
Chris Paul, Clippers
Russell Westbrook, Thunder
Deron Williams, Nets

Carmelo Anthony, Knicks
Kevin Durant, Thunder
Blake Griffin, Clippers
Andre Iguodala, 76ers
LeBron James, Heat
Kevin Love, Timberwolves

Tyson Chandler, Knicks

Not much surprises there.  You have Lebron James, Kevin Durant, Kobe Bryant,  Carmelo Anthony, Blake Griffin as some of the top guys on this team. It’s a very guard heavy team, and that should be a good way to get this team moving.  Tyson Chandler will get plenty of time at the center position as he’s the only “center” listed.  But I’d imagine Kevin Love could play some time at that position.

It’s been a while since I’ve had much interest in the men’s basketball Olympics team.  I can recall the Original Dream Team in 1992, which had that impressive lineup of Michael Jordan, Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, Karl Malone, John Stockton, Chris Mullins, just to name a few.  That was off the top of my head as well.

But it’s hard to compete with what that team was able to accomplish.  There was a documentary on ESPN about that team, so do yourself a favor and check it out.  If you don’t know anything about that team, just know this, they came out and won games by 50some points at times on their way to a gold medal.  There was no competition for that team, and like I said no other dream team comes close to accomplishing what they did.

Even looking at this year’s squad, you have to hope it all mixes well and they’re able to take the gold medal. I  strongly believe this team will do that, but with all the international flavor in the NBA, there might be some competition out there. In the end, the gold is what it’s all about, so if these guys can do that, and have the American anthem playing when it’s all done, then their jobs are complete.  In the words of a wrestling fan, “USA USA USA USA!”
