NBA Western Conference Finals Game One Recap

San Antonio Spurs  101  Oklahoma City Thunder  98

(Spurs Lead Series 1-0)

This game is in the books and the Spurs are making their march towards the history books as they’ve now racked up nineteen straight wins.  This ties the NBA record for winning streak continued through the playoffs, and if the Spurs win this one after scoring a season low 16 points in the third quarter, who knows what might stop them?

The Thunder gave the Spurs all they could handle in those second and third quarters as they racked up points and were taking it to the team.  They outscored the Spurs 29-22 in the second quarter and 24-16 in the third quarter.

But the Spurs got a wake up call and were told by Gregg Popovich that “I want some nasty” and nasty was brought as they smothered the Thunder were some defense.  It helped that the Spurs put up 39 points in that final quarter to put away the Thunder in game one.

Manu Ginobili led the way for the Spurs with his 26 points, while Kevin Durant paced the Thunder with his own 27 points.  Russell Westbrook didn’t give much him with his 17 points and took a bad fall during the game that might have affected him.  Durant and him will have to step up their game if the Thunder want to slow down and possibly stop this Spurs freight train.  That’s about the best way to describe the Spurs right now as they are rolling through the playoffs.

Only the fourth team to start the playoffs, the Spurs joined the ’01 Lakers and ’89 Lakers who won eleven games in a row and both made it to the NBA Finals.  The ’82 Lakers are the team that the Spurs have now tied and they made it and won in the NBA Finals.  History looks to be on the side of the Spurs.

There’s something big happening down there in San Antonio and Oklahoma City will have to figure out how to bring down this mighty giant.
